Four Vietnamese men 2 residents of the United States and 2 nationals and from the Southern part of the country have been arrested for allegedly running a betting ring for the World Cup Soccer matches said the Vietnam police on Monday.
The four men were arrested by the police on Sunday after a hotel in the Southern Mekong Delta province of Can Tho was raided by the police. The police confiscated $4,370 dollars or 3,400 Euros, and 12.6 million Dong which is the equivalent of $790 dollars or 625 Euros. This was all told to us on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.
We were told that 2 of the men were permanent residents of the United States one of them is 38 and living in Texas and the other is 39 and from Florida. The other 2 were Vietnamese nationals.
The Police said the two American residents only just returned to Vietnam recently and began running the gambling ring on Friday when the World cup was kicked off in Germany.
Even though betting on soccer matches is highly illegal in Vietnam, gambling on soccer is rampant and a big problem for the police in Vietnam.
